課程概述

This course will be divided into three parts, and takes Michael Ondaatje’s novel_In the Skin of a Lion_as the subject of thought. The first part reviews the studies on the novel and explores new ways of interpretations. Drawing attention to the issue of trauma and skin in the novel, the second part reviews contemporary trauma studies on literatures, and assesses the possibilities of bridging the issue of trauma and the representation of skin. The third part studies Didier Anzieu’s theory of the Skin-ego, and applies it as the theoretical framework for reading the trauma and skin in_In the Skin of a Lion_. This course will give a comprehensive study on the concepts of trauma, skin, and the Skin-ego, and utilize these concepts to analyze the given text.

課程目標
By reviewing the studies of Michael Ondaatje’s novel and the discourses of trauma and skin, the course objective is to rethink the issue of trauma in the text with an extra focus on the notion of skin. The course will not only familiarize the students with the text and the theoretical concepts, but also equip the students with critical capabilities required to undertake advanced thesis work on this topic.
